General Rules

Composers from all over the world and from all walks of life are eligible to participate in the Oticons Faculty Competition. There are no limitations or other parameters that may account for non-eligibility and inhibit anyone from entering it.

(a) The Competition is open to all participants regardless of professional status, age, education, and/or background.

(b) All participants must accept the Oticons Faculty Competition structure and content, mission statement, participant tasks and winner awards.

(c) All participants must accept and comply with the Competition’s legal and regulatory terms and conditions. For more information, please read the Official Rules page.

The steps that you need to complete successfully to participate are:

Early-bird Registration Opening: September 1st
Early-bird Registration Deadline: January 1st at 12 p.m.(noon) UTC
Normal Registrations Deadline: February 29th at 12 p.m. (noon) UTC.

ROUND ONE

Assignment #1
FROM HERE TO ETERNITY | Compose a memorable Main Theme!

You are requested to compose a great melody, a memorable tune, one that a filmmaker would consider a Main Theme. With this task you are called to prove your skill into composing a melody that might instantly get imprinted in the memory of the audience and even make them hum it after a single listening.

Specifications

- Maximum duration 60 seconds.
- Complete freedom of style/genre/instrumentation/orchestration.
- Composition to be delivered in mp3 format, 320kbps.
Assignment #2
BATTLE OF THE BOWS | Compose an epic cue... only with strings!

You are requested to compose Epic, powerful, grandiose, heroic music, without the use of any percussions, brass, woodwinds or choir but ONLY with strings and any other acoustic instruments (recorded or sampled) that qualify as string instruments.


Specifications

- Maximum duration 60 seconds.
- Delivery of the Score Sheets in PDF format.
Note: the name of the Orchestrator should be the participant's unique Registration ID or should be left blank if another person will do the orchestration.
- Composition to be delivered in mp3 format, 320kbps.

IMPORTANT NOTE for Assignment 2

No non-acoustic and electronic or electric instruments of any kind (synths, pads, electric guitars etc.) are allowed to be used!
This does not include digital sample libraries of instruments that are naturally necessary for the production of all your cues.

Assignment #3
ENVISION THE NOTES | Score a Scene from a film's Script without any visual aid!

You are requested to compose the original score of a script's key scene from a real in-development feature film production. For this task you shall be provided with only the script pages of that certain scene and with a brief from the director of the film.

Every year the film project linked with this Assignment is different. The participants, upon successful registration, are been sent automatically the SCRIPT Scene and the BRIEF with the Director's elaborate input.

Specifications

- Maximum duration 90 seconds.
- Delivery of the Score Sheets in PDF format.
Note: the name of the Orchestrator should be the participant's unique Registration ID or should be left blank if another person will do the orchestration.
- Complete freedom of style/genre/instrumentation/orchestration.
- Composition to be delivered in mp3 format, 320kbps.

IMPORTANT NOTE for Assignment 3

This task isn't about scoring "on picture" but it is about getting inspired only by reading the scene on the script and the director's brief.
The Director's Brief provides a good overview of the entire story and clarifies what they seek to achieve emotionally, through music, in that scene.

COMPOSERS SHOULD PAY SPECIAL ATTENTION TO THE FOLLOWING DETAILS

EXCEEDED DURATION

PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT THE SUBMITTED COMPOSITIONS DO NOT EXCEED THE REQUESTED DURATION. THE MORE THEY EXCEED THE MORE THE FINAL RATING OF THE ENTRY WILL BE AFFECTED OR THEY MAY EVEN BE DISQUALIFIED.

NAME ON SCORES

PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT THE SUBMITTED SCORE SHEETS (CONDUCTORS' SCORE IN PDF FORMAT) DO NOT HAVE THEIR NAME ON IT. THE VOTING IS ANONYMOUS AND IT WILL BE DISRUPTED BY THIS ERROR. COMPOSERS SHALL BE DISQUALIFIED.

ROUND TWO

Assignment #4
SELF-PITCHING | You made it this far. Now dazzle us with your Best Ever Composition!
The 20 finalists that will be announced by mid-March, will be called to upload within five (5) days an existing work of theirs as a "pitch" for our Jury. It should be an excerpt from the best composition they have ever composed, which they feel characterizes best their personal musical style. They should also send over a professional CV, which only the President of the Jury will have access to.

It is advised to have the composition selected and the file prepared before the announcement of the 20 finalists!

Specifications

- No duration restriction (remember though that "less is more").
- Composition to be delivered in mp3 format, 320kbps.
- Professional CV in PDF format.
Note: because the voting will be anonymous the CVs will only be shared with the President of the Jury, Sir Dirk Brossé before commencing of the deliberation with all jury members that will define the final winners.

Submission Process & Technical Specifications Summary

1.
All Submissions should be uploaded on this page (https://entries.oticons.com/login) where the participant should login with his email and the code he/she acquired after having completed his registration.
2.
All Submissions for Round One (three mp3 and two PDF files) should be in separate single files with the filenames as follows:
task1.mp3, task2.mp3, task2.pdf, task3.mp3, task3.pdf
3.
All 60-seconds compositions ideally shouldn't exceed 4MB filesize and all 90-seconds compositions shouldn't exceed 7MB filesize.
4.
Submissions of the Top-20 finalists for Assignment #4 should have the following filenames: task4.mp3, task4.pdf
5.
Submission of the Top-20 finalists for Assignment #4 ideally shouldn't exceed 10MB filesize.
6.
All audio files should strictly be in MP3 format (320kbps, stereo). No other file formats will be accepted.
7.
All score sheets and CVs should strictly be in PDF format, A4 size. No other file formats will be accepted.

Important Note

The participants are only allowed to log in at the given Login page and upload all the materials of all completed Assignments #1, #2 and #3 only ONCE!!! You may log in multiple times, but you are only allowed to do only ONE batch upload of all files (3 mp3 files & 2 pdf files). In other words, the participants aren't allowed to upload the files separately, delete them or replace them! Once the upload of all materials of the completed first three assignments will be validated their login will be locked!
